The project has made me think on how to develop some of the collaborative and discursive elements we had in the workshop in order to make a constant forum or a tool to address diverse topics on contemporary artistic practice as well as its connection and situation in society. I feel that progressing on the experience we had - and using the documentary as a material for presenting - and of perhaps raising discussion on what should and could be done better - in terms of realizing workshop, as well as presenting them to the audience making the audiovisual document. I feel that the simple tactic of letting people to talk to each other is the most interesting. Discussion is an organic way of enabling multiple viewpoints without the need of explaining and over analyzing the statements that are being made by a voice over or some other kind of mark of the"author". Reflection in a group situation is by its own nature filled with dynamics of different people and perspectives. The idea of a voice over seems forced when people's active attitude towards voicing out their thinking is present.
I think about voice over because I want to think about the future of this project and its possible manifestations - and what should be focused on. What is the added value on the fact that the workshop is being documented on video and visible to the audience - because I feel that even though I am not sure if this kind of video that we made is able to depict the situation in its core - it is still an attempt to portray "what happened" - meaning what were discussed and what approaches people took on to the question of artistic practice.
I feel that I don't want to introduce a ready and finished package with SwappingThePractices, even though this world seems to be filled with processes, it is still wide enough formulation that functions as the title for the way I want to deal with the issues of the what is been connected and emerged when people get together, what means practice and what is its relation on how art is, what are we making by discussing and what are we making by presenting, and all in all what kinds of approaches are needed in order to distill or to awaken reality.

Dokkari koottu / Documend assembled
Tänään sitten sanoimme, että ok, tämä dokumentaatio on nyt tällainen ja sellaisenaan tässä hetkessä valmis. Eli kovin on vaikeaa on sanoa, että ei olisi mitään viilattavaa mutta kyllä se nyt saa olla noin. Nyt uunituoretta tilitystä:
Aliarvioin huimasti tekstitykseen tarvitun ajan ja tein kaksi tiivistunnelmaista vuorokautta läpeensä hommia ottaakseni kiinni tämän virhearvioinnin aiheuttaman tilan. Ja dokumentin tekstityksiin varmaan on tarttunut jotain tästä hopusta. Mutta siis prosessit ovat sellaisia. Uusi leikkausohjelma, paljon puhetta ja sanottavaa joka ei käänny englanniksi ihan sanasta sanaan ja sitten vielä pienen pientä fiksailua, joka on kuluttavaa kun kokonaisuus on niinkin pitkä. Jos alustavasti materiaalia oli noin 26 tuntia ja sitten kävimme sitä lävitse yhdessä ja erikseen ja tiivistimme työpajaviikonlopun prosessin lopulta 1 tunnin ja noin 10 minuutin pituiseksi "läpikäynniksi".
Koska työstämme materiaalia vielä verkkosivuja varten, on projektin tuotanto vielä käynnissä, ja paljon oleellista itse projetillekin tulee esiin nettisivuille laitettavista videoista, ne eivät siinä mielessä ole vain "extraa" vaan tärkeä osa tätä projektia. Varmaankin joudumme vielä tarkentamaan sitä itsellemmekin, että mikä on tämän nyt valmistuneen dokumentaation suhde on tähän hankeeseen kokonaisuudessaan. Se ei nimittäin ole lopputulos.

Today we said that - Okay this documentation is now like this - and as it is here at this moment - ready. That meaning that it is very hard to say that there wouldn't have been left anything to tweak but now it may be left like that. Now fresh pouring of thoughts from behind the scenes: I totally underestimated the time needed to make the subtitles and made two quite intensive days and nights work in order to compensate for the situation that this bad assesment led me. And there must be some traces left in the document subtitlesofthat hurry. But processes are like that. New editing software, lot of talk that dosn't traslate easily end then little fixing of this and that, which is tiresome when the entity is even that long. If we initially had material about 26 hrs and then we went through it together and individually ending up with a 1 hr and 10 minutes of distillation - or like we say a "walkthrough" of the process of the workshop weekend. Because we still work on the material for the web pages, the project production still going, and lot of the essential things to the project are presented through the videos put on to the project's web page. And they are not in that sense in anyway "extra" but an important part of this project. We probably have to still focus a bit to orselves as well that what is the relationship of this documantation to the whole project. Because it is not the end result.

EDITING
Onhan tämä vaikeaa kun n. 30 tunnista pitäisi saada kokoon napakka max. 45 minuuttinen. Koska työtä tekee tehokkaasti vain maksimissaan 4 tuntia kerrallaan - tuntuu että aivot käyvät ylikierroksia ja elän uudestaan ja uudestaan samaa viikonloppua. Mutta halu tai välttämättömyyskin saada valmista aikaan on. Olen miettinyt paljon sitä miten tuoda esiin ihmisten ajatuksia ettei lopputulos olisi vain rakeisia ajatuspaloja ja miten tämä projekti liittyy tosi-tv:seen - alkuasetelmaan jonka määritimme. Ehkä ei mitenkään - ehkä se on vain osana rakennetta mutta ei muotoa. Tai toisinpäin. LOL
Tottakai täytyy myöntää että editoinnissa on kestänyt pidempää kuin olimme suunnitelleet. Osaksi oli aluksi nääntymystä - eräänlaista väsymystä ja etäisyyden tarvetta. Sitten oli kaikkea muuta. Mutta koska meistä tuntuu että tämä on eräänalainen avaava hanke - kiinnostus olisi jo miettiä mitä seuraavaksi.

Because one works only 4 hours efficiently at a time - it feels that brains function on overdrive and I go through again and again the same weekend. But wanting and (needing to) finish exists. I have been thinking a lot how to bring forward peoples thoughts so that the end result won't be just grainy snippets and how this project is linked with the idea of reality-tv - a pre-condition that we placed. Maybe it isn't included at all - maybe it's part of the structure and not the form. Or other way round. LOL
Of course I have to admit that editing process has taken longer than we had planned. Partly because at the beginning we we're exhausted - tired and wanting to have distance from the project. Then there was everything else. But because we feel that this was a sort of initiative project - we are interested in thinking whats next.
Tottakai täytyy myöntää että editoinnissa on kestänyt pidempää kuin olimme suunnitelleet. Osaksi oli aluksi nääntymystä - eräänlaista väsymystä ja etäisyyden tarvetta. Sitten oli kaikkea muuta. Materiaalin työstöä - vähän ajatuksia välillä / Working the material - a few notes on the way
Heti työpajan jälkeen olin aika "täynnä" ja sen prosessointi mitä projekti oli (minulle) tai mitä siitä jäi jälkeen on nyt parhaillaan käynnissä. Teimme pienen tiivistyksen 1/2 - lehteen http://www.puolilehti.fi/ jossa otimme mukaan ajatuksia kommenteista joita esitettiin meidän työpajan jälkeisessä tapaamisessa. Luulin, että kirjoittaisimme isomman jutun, mutta koska olin käsittänyt väärin ja tilaa oli niukemmin, teimme ratkaisun jossa laitoimme vähän ajatuksia kasaan.
Olemme katsoneet vasta osan kuvatusta materiaalista, ja mielenkiintoisaa pohdintaa on kyllä tallentunut. Työpajassa oli niin paljon hyvää keskustelua - onneksi sitä on tullut myös talteen. Ja siksipä haaste tehdä siitä NAPAKKA dokumentti on vielä vaikeampi - materiaalia olisi kyllä laajempaankin kokonaisuuteen. Ja me mietimmekin Artun kanssa vaihtoehtoisia tapoja esittää materiaalia.
Minun omaan työskentelyyni työpaja on kyllä vaikuttanut. Se on tarkoittanut itselle asetetun vaatimuksen - tekemisen ja sanomisen luonteesta ja sen merkityksestä - tarkentumista. Työpajan jälkeen tunnen uskaltavani aiempaa paremmin luottaa siihen, että se mitä itse tunnen ja ajattelen toimii ja "riittää". Ja paradoksaalisesti myös paremmin osaan kyseenalaistaa oman tekemiseni motiiveja.
Ehkä se on keskusteluyhteyden luomisen kautta jäsentyvää omien ajatusten "löytämistä" tai ehkä niiden ulostuontiin liittyvää tiivistymistä ja jakamiseen liittyvää mielihyvää.

/As soon as the workshop was over I was kind of "full" and prosessing what project was (for me) or what was left behind is now currently active. We did a small summary to 1/2- magazine http://www.puolilehti.fi/
in which we took in parts of the comments that where presented in the meeting after the workshop. I thought that we would write a bigger story - but because I had misunderstood and there where less words in the piece that I had thought - we ended up just putting some thoughts together.
We have watched just a part of the filmed material and interesting thoughts has been recorded. Because in the workhop had so much good discussion - I am glad that it has also been captured. And therefore the challenge to make a COMPACT document is even more harder, there is enough material for a larger entity.
This workshop has influenced my own work. It has meant sharpening of the claim that I have set for my self - about the nature of doing and saying and its meaning. After the workhop I feel that I have better courage than earlier to trust in what I say and feel works and is "enough". And paradoxically I can also better question the motives of my own working.
Maybe it is about my own thoughts being structured thru discussion and the pleasure that one gets in sharing them.
